French Oil on Canvas Painting No. 01 by Jules Agard, 1970s

$3,800.00

A rare original oil on canvas by French artist Jules Agard, created during the 1970s, where abstraction becomes as much about surface as it is about composition.

The painting unfolds through layered washes of smoky greys, muted mauves, and mineral blues, punctuated by luminous turquoise forms that emerge and recede across the canvas. Agard’s handling of paint creates a weathered, almost geological texture, allowing each layer to reveal traces of the one beneath. The result is a composition that feels both atmospheric and deeply tactile, balancing movement with restraint.

Rather than depicting a defined subject, the work invites interpretation. Its softened palette and organic forms evoke eroded landscapes, shifting coastlines, or the quiet patina of aged stone, giving the painting a sense of depth that changes with the surrounding light.

Jules Agard (1905–1986) was a master French ceramist active from the 1940s to the 1970s. As the technical director at Atelier Madoura in Vallauris, he played a pivotal role in Picasso’s ceramics, shaping the pots that Picasso painted during their 22-year collaboration.

Known for his exceptional craftsmanship, Agard was admired even by Picasso for his skill in molding clay. Beyond his work with Picasso, he was an artist in his own right, creating his own ceramic and painted works—often figurative or abstract, inspired by mythological creatures and freeform shapes.
