A French table lamp from the 1970s, formerly part of the furnishings of the French Senate, pairing a slender, fluted brass column with a wide, shallow shade in Italian Scavo glass,
The warm brass gives the piece a formal presence, while the softly mottled glass diffuses the light into a muted amber glow.
Scavo glass is particularly distinctive for its surface. Developed to evoke the appearance of ancient, excavated glass, the technique produces a cloudy, textured finish with irregular deposits and variations across the surface. Rather than appearing perfectly smooth or transparent, the glass has an aged, almost archaeological quality—each shade taking on its own subtle movement of color and texture as light passes through it.
The use of Italian glass within a French-made lighting fixture reflects a common practice among French lighting manufacturers of the period, who regularly incorporated Murano and other Italian glass into their designs.
The base is inscribed “Sénat BAT,” indicating that the lamp was used within the French Senate. That institutional history gives this fixture a more specific sense of place: designed for an interior where lighting was expected to be functional, formal, and quietly refined.
