French Teal Ceramic Bowl by Gustave Asch, 1940s

$1,300.00

A French ceramic bowl by Gustave Asch from the 1940s. Created in Sainte-Radegonde, the bowl is finished in a richly glazed teal, its surface alive with subtle tonal variation that shifts between deep turquoise and softer mineral hues. Against this luminous ground, raised white ceramic ornament unfolds in rhythmic loops and scrolling forms, framing the rim before gathering into bold, symmetrical motifs across the interior. Resting on a low circular foot, the form is broad and shallow, allowing the decoration to be appreciated from every angle.

Gustave Asch was one of those French ceramicists whose work feels inseparable from the landscape that shaped it. Working in the small village of Sainte-Radegonde in the early 20th century, he crafted vessels that carried both the refinement of Art Deco design and the intimacy of studio pottery. Asch favored generous, rounded forms—shapes that felt held rather than engineered—and glazes that moved with the light, shifting from deep turquoise to soft mineral tones.

His pieces often reveal a playful restraint: sculptural rims, looping motifs, and hand-wrought details that turn functional forms into small architectural moments. Though created in the 1940s, his ceramics feel timeless—objects that could live just as comfortably in a Parisian apartment as they once did in the quiet workshops of Sainte-Radegonde.

Today, Asch’s work is admired for its balance of elegance and ease, its unmistakable Art Deco lineage softened by the warmth of the artisan’s hand.
