French Textured Glass + Iron Torch Sconce, 1960s

$2,600.00

Glass and iron come together in this 1960s French torch sconce, where traditional form is extended to an architectural scale, rising to nearly four feet in height.

The structure is defined by a slender iron stem, formed and finished in a deep, matte black. Its length gives the piece a vertical emphasis, allowing it to function not just as a light source, but as a presence on the wall. Subtle variations in the metalwork, at the joints, along the surface, speak to its making, where utility and proportion were considered in equal measure.

At the top, the lantern is composed of clear, textured glass panels held within a restrained iron frame. The glass carries a gentle irregularity, its surface lightly rippled, softening the light as it passes through. Crossed supports add structure without weight, holding the panels in quiet tension while maintaining openness.

The cap above is tiered and slightly flared, a familiar torch-like silhouette that directs light downward while allowing a soft glow to escape at the edges. The proportions are deliberate, the lantern compact in contrast to the elongated stem, reinforcing the piece’s height and balance.

What sets this piece apart is its scale. At four feet tall, the sconce extends beyond the typical bounds of wall lighting, reading almost as a fixed torch or architectural element,  anchoring a space vertically.

When lit, the effect is warm and atmospheric. The textured glass diffuses the light, while the height of the piece allows illumination to travel, casting a gentle gradient along the wall.
