German Hand-Cast Glass + Bronze Side Table by Lothar Klute, 1970s

$5,400.00

A German side table from the 1970s by Lothar Klute, where sculpture and function are brought together through material, process, and proportion.

The composition is defined by a hand-cast glass top, its softly undulating surface preserving the subtle irregularities of the casting process. Rather than concealing the making of the piece, the textured glass celebrates it, catching and diffusing light in a way that changes throughout the day.

Supporting the top is a worked bronze frame, its hammered finish revealing the touch of the maker in every facet. Slender tapering legs rise to oversized forged corner details, creating a structure that feels at once delicate and enduring.

The contrast between the weight of bronze and the transparency of glass gives the table a quiet architectural balance, where each material enhances the character of the other.

Klute’s work reflects a deeply rooted understanding of material and form. Trained as a blacksmith in Mailar and later studying sculpture in Aachen, he brought a sculptor’s sensibility to functional objects. In the 1970s, he produced public sculptures in Berlin, and together with his wife, interior designer Gisela Klute, created furniture that balanced imagination with refinement. Today, his legacy is preserved in part through a dedicated sculpture park at Galerie Klute in Waldemai.
