Italian Art Deco Wood + Rope Console, 1940s
An Italian Art Deco wood console from the 1940s, with a compact form and an openness at its sides. The dark inset top sits within a warm wood surround, slightly raised above a pair of drawers.
Fine dark lines divide the drawer fronts into a geometric grid, punctuated by round brass pulls. At either end, layered wood bands turn over the corners and continue down the legs, giving the console a strong outline without making it feel heavy.
The sides provide the most surprising detail. Slender diagonal ropes cross between the wood supports, forming an airy lattice that reveals the wall and floor beyond. Their delicate pattern plays against the solid top and drawers, while the wood grain and gently rounded corners soften the geometry.
Placed in an entry or beneath a mirror, the console offers useful drawer storage and a surface for objects, but its profile is equally compelling left spare. It brings together the ordered lines of Art Deco design with a lightness that lets it sit comfortably in a room.
