Italian Bamboo Wall Mirror Attributed to Franco Albini, 1960s

$2,400.00

An Italian bamboo wall mirror attributed to Franco Albini from the 1960s, with an oval frame. A narrow bamboo border holds the mirror, while an open lattice extends outward in a continuous rhythm of slender rods and curved loops.

The woven connections give the frame its texture and depth. Light passes through the spaces between them, allowing the wall behind to become part of the design. The honey-colored bamboo brings warmth to the precise, repeating pattern. From a distance, the frame reads almost like a halo; up close, its construction becomes the focus. The oval glass remains generous enough for everyday use, while the surrounding lattice gives the piece a presence well beyond its reflection.

The use of bamboo connects the piece to an important chapter in Italian modernism. Albini was instrumental in bringing cane, rattan, and related natural materials into the language of modern design, most notably through his work with Vittorio Bonacina in the early 1950s. Designs such as the celebrated Margherita and Gala chairs demonstrated how traditional craft techniques could be transformed through disciplined structure and modern form.

In an entry, above a console, or between windows, the mirror adds pattern without closing off the wall. Its appeal lies in that balance of openness and intricacy, with the natural bamboo doing as much work as the glass.

The attribution to Albini is particularly fitting in this context. Throughout his work as an architect and designer, he approached furniture as an extension of architecture, reducing objects to essential lines while allowing their materials and construction to remain legible.
