Italian Birdseye Maple Chest of Drawers by Saporiti Italia, 1970s
A 1970s Italian chest of drawers by Saporiti Italia, distinguished by its low profile, unusual proportions, and luminous birdseye maple surface.
The form is composed of four generous drawers set above minimalist wooden feet. A broad top extends beyond the case on either side, creating a subtle architectural gesture and giving the piece a sense of horizontality beyond that of a traditional chest.
Wrapped in highly lacquered birdseye maple, the surface carries a deep, reflective gloss that brings out the natural pattern and movement of the wood. The figure changes with the light, shifting between warmth and reflection while maintaining its overall form.
It is the overhanging surface that defines how the piece lives in a room. In an entryway, it creates a natural landing place while allowing the chest to read more like a console than a conventional dresser. Along a wall, the extended top establishes a strong horizontal line and gives the piece room to breathe.
The Saporiti Italia maker’s mark remains visible on the back, grounding the piece in its Italian provenance.
