Italian ‘Coronado’ Leather Lounge Chair + Ottoman by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for B&B Italia, 1970s

$5,400.00

The ‘Coronado’ lounge chair and ottoman were designed by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for B&B Italia in 1974. Defined by its soft, voluminous form, the design pairs architectural lines with inviting comfort. The generous arms and backrest are button tufted, their sculptural curves wrapped in supple cognac leather. Pioneering for its time, the Coronado introduced B&B Italia’s innovative polyurethane injection-molding technique, allowing for resilient, ergonomic cushioning that retains its shape.

Echoing the chair’s rounded silhouette, the matching ottoman offers a seamless extension for repose. The Coronado remains one of the Scarpa duo’s most enduring designs—a statement of 1970s Italian modernism.

Afra Bianchin and Tobia Scarpa, born in Italy in 1937 and 1935, studied architecture in Venice and began their careers in 1958 with designs in Murano glass. Their practice quickly expanded into furniture, where collaborations with B&B Italia, Cassina, and other leading manufacturers defined an era of Italian modernism. Today, their work is represented in major museum collections worldwide, a testament to their lasting influence on 20th-century design.
