Italian Double-Sided Rosewood Credenza by Molteni, 1960s
An Italian double-sided rosewood credenza by Molteni from the 1960s, designed with the kind of restraint and precision that allows it to command a room from every angle.
Crafted in richly figured rosewood, the surface carries the dramatic grain patterns that defined much of Italian modernism during the period. The wood shifts in tone across the façade, moving from warm amber to deep cocoa, while recessed pulls and long horizontal lines keep the silhouette architectural and composed.
Designed to float within a space rather than sit against a wall, the credenza is fully finished on both sides with an unusual level of attention and symmetry. One side is composed of six central drawers framed by cabinets at either end, while the reverse opens into shelving and open storage, allowing the piece to function beautifully from either direction. The long, low proportions give it a grounded presence within a room, whether positioned behind a seating arrangement, in an open-plan interior, or used as a room divider.
Founded in 1934 by Angelo Molteni in Giussano, Italy, Molteni became one of the defining names in Italian modern furniture, known for its architectural lines and carefully considered construction. By the 1960s, the company was collaborating with many of the leading architects and designers shaping Italian interiors, helping establish the highly considered aesthetic that came to define Italian modernism internationally.
