Italian ‘Giraffa’ Adjustable Floor Lamp by Angelo Brotto for Esperia, 1970s
Designed by Angelo Brotto for Esperia in the 1970s, the Giraffa floor lamp pairs Italian minimalism with precise engineering. Linear and architectural in form, it’s constructed of satin-finished aluminum with chromed brass accents and a counterweight system that allows for fluid, gravity-balanced adjustment. Both arm and shade can be extended, tilted, or rotated.
Sculptural in motion and silhouette—ideal behind a lounge chair, beside a low-slung sofa, or anchoring a gallery-like corner.
Angelo Brotto (1914–2002) was a Venetian architect, designer, and artist trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice. A versatile figure in mid-century Italian design, his practice spanned painting, sculpture, and lighting—each discipline informing the others in materiality and form.
In the 1960s, Brotto began a long-standing collaboration with Esperia, a Tuscan lighting manufacturer founded in the 1950s and based in Poggibonsi. Their partnership flourished through the 1970s and early 1980s, producing a body of work defined by slender lines, satin-finished aluminum, chromed brass, smoked or clear glass, and integrated systems of counterweights and halogen or LED illumination.
Designs like the Giraffa, Cigno, and Sculptura blur the line between utility and art. For Brotto, light was never purely functional—it was atmospheric, spatial, and deeply expressive.
