Italian Glass + Brass Pendant by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte, 1950s

$9,800.00

A rare Italian pendant by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte, circa 1950s. The design suspends a gently contoured diffuser of acid-etched glass, its surface marked with fine linear striations that scatter and soften light in shifting patterns.

Brass mounts clasp the shade at its edges, rising to a slender stem with a circular ring detail and domed canopy above. At once sculptural and ethereal, the piece reflects Ingrand’s mastery of glass and light, casting a warm, atmospheric glow.

Max Ingrand, a celebrated French designer and master glassmaker, collaborated extensively with Fontana Arte, an Italian lighting and glass design company, during the mid-20th century. Max Ingrand became the artistic director of Fontana Arte in 1954, a position he held until 1967. During this period, he was instrumental in shaping the company’s design direction, emphasizing the use of glass in innovative ways.

Ingrand was known for his meticulous approach to glasswork, often treating glass not just as a functional material but as a medium for artistic expression. His designs for Fontana Arte combined elegance with modernity, making use of etched, frosted, and colored glass to create visually stunning and functional pieces. The collaboration between Max Ingrand and Fontana Arte resulted in some of the most iconic lighting designs of the 20th century.
