Italian Gold-Plated Glass Round Wall Mirror by M. Furgieri, 1960s

$3,900.00

An Italian round wall mirror by M. Furgieri, circa 1960, sourced in Milan.

The circular mirror plate is framed by a wide band of gold-plated glass, intricately sand-jet engraved with a continuous procession of stylized figures, animals and geometric symbols. Arranged in small narrative panels, the imagery draws on ancient and Egyptian-inspired visual language, with human figures appearing alongside horses, birds and other animals. The density of the decoration rewards a closer look, with individual scenes emerging from the gold-toned surface.

Furgieri is known for a small body of distinctive Italian mirrors from the 1960s that combine engraved glass with precious-metal finishes. Documented examples were produced in both gold-plated and silver-plated versions, with sand-jet engraving used to build intricate decoration directly into the glass. The technique gives the perimeter an almost relief-like quality while preserving the lightness and transparency of the material.

A clear outer rim extends just beyond the engraved border, giving the mirror a layered construction while keeping its profile visually light. The original mirror plate has developed extensive foxing and losses to the silvering, creating a heavily antiqued surface. Rather than obscuring the design, the aged center draws greater attention to the intricately etched perimeter.
