Italian Metal “Accademia” Table Lamp attributed to Cini Boeri for Artemide, 1978

$3,600.00

An exercise in reduction, the “Accademia” table lamp by Cini Boeri for Artemide, designed in 1978.

A planar metal base supports a taut rectangular shade, its white textile fabric stretched precisely across a minimal wire frame. The result is a form that feels almost graphic in nature: a luminous surface rising from a dark architectural plinth.

Rather than directing light outward, the shade transforms into light itself. The tightly drawn fabric diffuses illumination evenly across its surface, creating a soft ambient glow that emphasizes atmosphere over brightness. By day, the lamp reads as an object; by night, it becomes a source of warmth within a room.

Cini Boeri (1924–2020), born Maria Cristina Mariani Dameno, was a pioneering Italian architect and designer who grew up in Milan and earned her architecture degree from the Polytechnic University in 1951—one of only three women to graduate that year. After early work with Gio Ponti and a decade-long collaboration with Marco Zanuso, she opened her own studio in 1963, focusing on architecture, interiors, and industrial design.

Her work with companies like Knoll, Arflex, Artemide, and Rosenthal helped shape postwar Italian design, with pieces like the “Strips” sofa system earning the Compasso d’Oro in 1979. Boeri also taught at the Politecnico and received numerous lifetime honors, including the Grande Ufficiale Ordine al Merito and Milan’s Ambrogino d’Oro.
