Italian Model 2144 Mappamondo Floor Lamp by Elio Martinelli for Martinelli Luce, 1968

$16,800.00

A rare Model 2144 floor lamp by Elio Martinelli, known as Mappamondo and produced by Martinelli Luce in 1968. Monumental in scale, the design echoes the sinuous curves of Martinelli’s iconic Serpente lamp, reimagined here as an enveloping globe of light. A tubular white lacquered steel frame coils upward in a looping gesture, cradling dual hemispherical shades in milky white acrylic.

When illuminated, the sphere diffuses a warm, ambient glow, channeling a luminous planet suspended within orbit. Both poetic and architectural, it stands as a commanding statement of Italian lighting design.

Elio Martinelli (1922–2004) founded Martinelli Luce in Lucca in 1950, becoming one of the defining voices of mid-century Italian lighting. Trained as both a painter and set designer, Martinelli translated a fascination with nature and geometry into luminous, sculptural forms.

Experimenting with then-new materials such as methacrylate and fiberglass, he captured the optimism of the Space Age in designs like the Serpente and Mappamondo—pieces that remain enduring icons. Still family-run today, Martinelli Luce continues to balance heritage with forward-thinking design, carrying Elio Martinelli’s vision into the present.
