Italian Murano Glass Pendant by Vittorio Zecchin for Venini, 1925
An Italian Murano glass pendant designed by Vittorio Zecchin for Venini from 1925, composed almost entirely in blown glass.
The pendant has an unusually elongated silhouette, beginning with a flared glass canopy and descending through a long, slender stem. The glass subtly swells and narrows along its length before opening into a broad, shallow disc above the shade, giving the fixture a sense of balance.
Below, the body takes the form of a softly tapered lantern, blown with pronounced vertical ribs that gather toward the top and round gently at the base. The clear glass gives the form remarkable lightness, while the ribbing catches and refracts the illumination within. A small suspended teardrop of glass finishes the pendant, introducing a delicate point beneath the larger volume.
What makes the piece particularly special is the continuity of glass from ceiling to shade. Rather than treating the suspension as secondary hardware, Zecchin makes it part of the composition, allowing the material itself to define nearly the entire fixture.
About Vittorio Zecchin
Vittorio Zecchin (1878–1947) was a pivotal figure in the revival of Murano glass in the early 20th century. Trained as a painter, Zecchin brought a refined artistic sensibility to glass design, emphasizing purity of form, subtle color, and classical balance.
His collaborations with Venini in the 1920s and 1930s helped redefine Murano production, moving it away from heavy ornamentation toward elegant, architecturally inspired forms. His influence remained strong through the 1940s, shaping a generation of Venetian glassmakers and leaving an enduring legacy in modern Murano design.
