Italian Oak Console in the Manner of Paolo Buffa, 1950s
An Italian oak console from the 1950s, in the manner of Paolo Buffa, the console is built around a shallow, faceted top, its long surface making the piece particularly suited to an entryway or narrow passage. Beneath, the structure is divided into three distinct sections.
A broad central panel provides visual weight, while open latticework on either side introduces a repeating pattern of intersecting diagonals. The open construction allows the wall behind to remain visible, giving the console a sense of depth without making its relatively substantial frame feel heavy.
At the center, a continuous length of oak bends away from the body before curling inward beneath the top and returning toward the base. The detail reads almost like a drawn line or scroll, softening the rectilinear composition. Viewed from the side, this element becomes especially sculptural, revealing the considerable depth of the curve and the way it appears to support the top while remaining largely decorative.
The oak has a deep, warm brown finish that emphasizes the grain throughout the broad central panel, top, and slender latticework. Rather than relying on applied ornament, the console creates decoration through the manipulation of the wood itself, the repeating X-patterns, layered edges, faceted footprint, and tightly curled end of the central support.
These qualities are particularly evocative of Paolo Buffa’s approach to Italian furniture during the mid-century period. His work frequently brought traditional cabinetmaking and decorative references into increasingly streamlined forms, resulting in furniture that could feel simultaneously classical and modern.
