Italian Parchment Secretary Cabinet Attributed to Guglielmo Ulrich, 1930s

A rare Italian secretary cabinet dating to the 1930s, attributed to Guglielmo Ulrich. Nearly the entire exterior is clad in natural parchment, opening to reveal a beech wood interior with open shelving, nine drawers, an upper cabinet and a central drop-front writing surface.

The cabinet was acquired approximately twenty years ago at an estate auction held at a private residence in the South of France, where the furnishings had belonged to a prominent Italian family who settled in France following the Second World War. The auctioneer identified the cabinet as a work by Guglielmo Ulrich at the time of the sale. No original documentation accompanied the piece, and the attribution is therefore based on this oral provenance together with its construction and close relationship to documented examples of Ulrich’s work.

That relationship can be seen throughout the cabinet. Ulrich frequently worked with parchment alongside contrasting woods, using luxurious materials within furniture that was architectural in scale and highly considered in its internal organization. Here, the pale parchment exterior gives way to a warm wood interior, with rounded corners and compartments arranged around the central writing surface. Most compelling are the substantial black fluted feet and dark hardware. Documented Ulrich furniture from the period employs closely related fluted feet in combination with parchment-covered cabinetry and dark handles, providing an important point of comparison for the attribution.

The construction is equally considered. Individual sheets of natural parchment have been applied across the cabinet, their joins, tonal variations and patina remaining visible across the surface. Dovetailed drawers, traditional hinges, slotted screws and metal stays supporting the drop front are consistent with high-level Italian cabinetmaking of the period. The parchment has developed considerable variation over time, giving the expansive exterior a surface that records its age rather than disguising it.

The central parchment-fronted panel lowers to become a writing surface. Nine drawers run across the lower section, while an upper two-door cabinet and open shelving provide additional storage and display. At 78 inches high and 53 inches wide, the cabinet has substantial scale, yet its unusually shallow 17.5-inch depth allows it to sit closely against the wall.

Its original function as a secretary remains entirely usable, but the configuration lends itself just as naturally to a bar, bookcase or living room cabinet. Closed, much of the piece reads as a tall expanse of parchment. Open, the contrast of parchment and wood reveals the complexity of its construction and the amount of storage contained within.

Guglielmo Ulrich (1904-1977) was an Italian architect, designer and decorator whose work helped define Milanese interiors between the 1930s and postwar period. Working for private residences as well as major architectural commissions, Ulrich approached furniture as part of a complete interior, with particular attention to proportion, materials and craftsmanship.

His furniture is known for its use of richly figured woods, parchment, leather, glass and metal, often bringing contrasting materials together within highly architectural forms. Cabinets and case pieces were an important part of his work, giving him space to explore elaborate interiors, specialized storage and finely executed cabinetmaking. Today, his designs are recognized among the more sophisticated expressions of Italian decorative arts and furniture design of the 20th century.
