Italian Pleated Velvet Sofa in the Manner of De Pas, D’Urbino & Lomazzi, 1970s

$7,200.00

A 1970s Italian sofa in the manner of Jonathan De Pas, Donato D’Urbino, and Paolo Lomazzi. Upholstered in a rich sepia-hued velvet, the form is defined by deeply pleated, ruched upholstery, creating a tactile landscape of folds and contours that invite both touch and repose.

Generously proportioned and low-slung, it features sweeping, continuous curves that dissolve the boundaries between seat, back, and arms — a hallmark of the period’s fascination with fluidity and comfort. The monolithic base and enveloping profile evoke the sensuous experimentation seen in the Piumino and Gianduiotto series by the trio.

Jonathan De Pas (1932-1991), Donato D’Urbino (1935-), and Paolo Lomazzi (1936-) are Italian designers who began working together in 1966. They are best known for their unconventional pop art designs, many of which are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris among others. Their most iconic pieces include the Joe Sofa, 1970 and the “Blow” armchair, 1969.
