Italian Rationalist Console with Mosaic Marble Top, Circa 1937

$28,000.00

Sourced directly from a Modernist villa outside of Milan, designed by architect Alessandro Minali, this console reflects the dialogue between architecture and craft in Italian design of the 1930s. A conical pedestal in richly grained walnut anchors the form, its precise geometry supporting a rectangular top inlaid with pietra dura.

The mosaic surface unfolds like a painted fresco rendered in stone: stylized figures in pale rose, ivory, and slate-grey marble are set against a ground of deep terracotta, their angular profiles articulated with precision. Black fish swim across the upper register, while copper and jade-green accents animate garments and details. The interplay of earthy tones and luminous fragments lends the composition a graphic intensity, recalling the bold contours of Novecento art while remaining wholly unique to its material language.

Created for the villa’s 1937 refurbishment by architect Alessandro Minali, the table was part of a larger vision in which furniture, materials, and interiors spoke as one. The table would have stood as both furniture and mural—an architectural element in dialogue with the space, carrying the spirit of Milanese ateliers of the period into everyday life.
