Italian Smoked Glass Wall Mirror Attributed to Cristal Arte, 1970s

An Italian smoked glass wall mirror attributed to Cristal Arte from the 1970s, distinguished by its layered oval construction and subtly decorative scalloped edge.

The mirror is composed of two oval glass elements, with a broad smoked glass surround framing a smaller, centrally positioned reflective surface. The outer glass has a warm bronze-gray tint, introducing a sense of depth and softness to the composition. Its generous proportions give the frame a substantial presence, while the transparency of the material allows it to remain visually light against the wall.

The most distinctive detail is the treatment of the outer perimeter. A continuous sequence of shallow, overlapping scallops follows the oval silhouette, creating a rhythmic pattern that becomes especially apparent when viewed from an angle. The beveled edges catch and refract light, producing subtle variations in tone and reflection. Rather than relying on an applied decorative frame, the ornament is worked directly into the glass itself, allowing the material to become the principal design element.

At the center, a clean oval mirror sits slightly raised above the surrounding smoked glass, secured by two small cylindrical metal fittings positioned at the top and bottom. These exposed details introduce a precise, functional quality that contrasts with the softness of the outer edge. The layered construction also creates a sense of dimension, with the central mirror appearing to float against the darker glass beneath it.

The design reflects the experimentation with glass that characterized Italian decorative furnishings during the 1970s, when manufacturers increasingly explored tinted surfaces, beveled edges, and unconventional framing techniques. The attribution to Cristal Arte connects the piece to a tradition of Italian glassmaking in which mirrors were treated as decorative objects in their own right, combining technical precision with expressive material treatments.
