Italian Starburst Motif Glass Wall Mirror Attributed to Max Ingrand For Fontana Arte, 1960s

$3,600.00

An Italian glass wall mirror from the 1960s, attributed to Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte, composed almost entirely through the layering, shaping, and tonal variation of glass.

A large circular panel of smoked glass forms the backdrop, its warm bronze tone creating a subtle halo around the central mirror. Suspended over it is a clear mirrored plate cut into an eight-pointed starburst-like silhouette, with alternating convex and concave curves giving the otherwise symmetrical composition a sense of movement. Two faceted metal fittings secure the central plate while remaining deliberately visible within the design.

The beveled perimeter is an especially important detail. Rather than allowing the central mirror to end with a simple cut edge, the broad bevel follows every curve and point of the silhouette. Light catches these angled surfaces differently from the mirror itself, producing a bright, almost prismatic outline that changes as the piece is viewed from different positions.

The attribution to Max Ingrand is particularly fitting in the sophisticated treatment of glass as both structure and ornament. As artistic director of Fontana Arte during much of the 1950s and 1960s, Ingrand developed lighting, mirrors, and decorative objects in which colored, cut, beveled, and layered glass became central to the composition. Here, the contrast between the circular background and more expressive central form creates the kind of depth associated with that approach.
