Italian Wool Lounge Chair in the Manner of Paolo Buffa, 1950s - 2 Available

$6,200.00

An Italian wool lounge chair from the 1950s, in the manner of Paolo Buffa, distinguished by its mahogany frame, openwork sides, and softly tailored upholstery.

The chair is built around a proportioned wooden structure, with slender legs that rise into sweeping, curved armrests. Each arm follows a continuous line from the front of the chair toward the back, its rounded edges and gently changing thickness giving the wood an almost fluid quality. The warm brown finish reveals subtle variations in grain and tone, emphasizing the craftsmanship behind its carefully shaped silhouette.

The most distinctive feature is the openwork detailing beneath the arms. Slender wooden elements intersect in a series of elongated curves, creating a decorative pattern that recalls traditional Italian furniture. These intersecting lines introduce movement and lightness to the sides, allowing the upholstery to remain visible through the frame. From a profile view, the arrangement becomes particularly expressive, transforming a structural element into an ornamental composition.

Upholstered in a muted taupe wool flannel, the generous seat and upright backrest provide a soft contrast to the polished wood. Three fabric-covered buttons punctuate the back cushion, introducing a detail that complements the chair's clean tailoring. The backrest rises above the wooden frame with a slight recline, while the cushioned seat sits comfortably within the surrounding structure.

The design is evocative of Paolo Buffa's approach to Italian furniture during the mid-century period. Known for combining classical influences with modern proportions, Buffa frequently explored the relationship between decorative craftsmanship and architectural clarity. The chair reflects that sensibility through its curves, carefully balanced proportions, and woodwork, which feels integral to the construction rather than applied for decoration.

Equally compelling from the front, side, and back, the chair offers the comfort of an upholstered lounge chair without the visual weight of a fully enclosed frame. Its open sides allow light to pass through, making it particularly suited to a living room, bedroom, or intimate seating.
