Large European Ceramic Tile Wall Panel, Circa 1970s

$8,800.00

A large European ceramic wall panel from the mid-20th century, depicting a classical figure across a field of individually formed and glazed terracotta tiles.

The composition is conceived as a single drawing in clay, with the figure extending across the grid rather than being contained within individual tiles. Incised lines trace the profile, body and remarkably detailed curls of the figure's hair, while areas of low relief give the surface a subtle dimensionality. A patterned border runs around the composition, further referencing the visual language of ancient frescoes, mosaics and architectural decoration.

The glaze moves through muted celadon, cream, ochre and earthen brown, settling differently into the incised and raised surfaces of each tile. Pinholing, firing variations and irregularities remain visible throughout, revealing the process of its making. Viewed from a distance, the image reads almost as an archaeological fragment; up close, the individual marks, textures and variations in the ceramic become increasingly apparent.

At just over five feet tall, the panel has an architectural scale unusual for studio ceramics. Creating an image of this size required the composition to be developed across dozens of separate pieces, each formed, decorated, glazed and fired before being assembled again into a continuous image.
