'Marsala' Cognac Leather Lounge Chair by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset, 1970s

$7,200.00

A French ‘Marsala’ lounge chair by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset, designed in 1971—a moment when Ducaroy began pushing seating into new territory, replacing traditional frames with low, sculptural forms and experimental materials.

The structure is defined by a continuous, smoked plexiglass shell—thermoformed into a single sweeping curve that folds from base to armrest to back. At the time, this use of molded plastic marked a shift: lighter, more fluid, and closer to the language of Space Age design than conventional upholstery.

Set within it, the seat reads as a series of volumes rather than a fixed form. Thick, generously padded cushions in cognac leather sit low and forward, their weight softening the frame. The proportions are deliberate—wide, grounded, and slightly reclined—encouraging a posture that is closer to lounging than sitting.

What defines the piece is this tension: structure and softness, clarity and collapse. The plexi frame holds its line, while the leather settles into it—creasing, folding, and taking on shape over time.

A chair that reads immediately from across the room, but reveals itself through use—material, posture, and silhouette working together.

DIMENSIONS: 33.5"W x 41"D x 30"H

ORIGIN: France

PERIOD: 1970s

MATERIALS: Leather,Acrylic

CONDITION: Very good vintage condition, with wear consistent with age and use.

The original cognac leather upholstery shows a well-developed patina throughout. Surface creasing, soft wrinkling, and areas of light wear are present across the seat, back, and arm cushions. Stitching remains intact, with no structural breaks observed.

The plexiglass shell retains its form and structural integrity. Surface scratching and scuffs are visible throughout, consistent with age. These are most noticeable along the arm sections and outer edges, where contact would naturally occur.

A well-preserved example, retaining its original materials, character, and maker's mark.
