Medium LS144 Murano Glass Flush Mount by Carlo Nason for AV Mazzega, 1969
Designed in 1969, Carlo Nason’s LS144 for AV Mazzega was originally conceptualized as a ceiling light, though collectors sometimes display it on a table or pedestal for its soft, atmospheric glow. Three handblown Murano-glass forms stack within a slim metal collar, tapering into a long, continuous drop.
In natural light, the glass carries a cool, milky sheen; once illuminated, its iridescent surface shifts into warm diffusion at the top and a layered transparency along the length of the shade. Sculptural in silhouette, it is unmistakably Nason—shaped by intentional lines and a honed understanding of how light travels through blown glass.
About the Designer
Born in Murano in 1935 into one of the island’s oldest glassmaking families, Carlo Nason learned the craft by watching master glassblowers from childhood—a lineage that shaped his lifelong pursuit of modern, architectural forms in glass. By the 1960s, he was designing for his family’s workshop, with early pieces now held in the Corning Museum of Glass.
His most defining work came through his collaboration with AV Mazzega from 1965 to 1980, where he developed designs that remain sought after in international auctions today. Across later collaborations with Vistosi, Moretti, Seguso, and Leucos, Nason continued to push Murano techniques toward contemporary design
His work has been exhibited at MoMA, the Design Triennial in Milan, and galleries throughout Europe. Clear-eyed, modern, and technically exacting, his lighting—like the LS144—reflects a designer deeply rooted in tradition yet devoted to forward-looking form.
