A monumental wall sculpture by Lucien Bénière, carved from an array of richly toned woods and standing over five feet in height. The surface forms a rhythmic collage of planes and textures—each segment individually articulated, yet unified in a quiet, meditative composition. Organic curves meet sharp delineations, inviting contemplation not only of form, but of the living history embedded in grain and gesture.
French artist Lucien Bénière (1922-1912) trained in wood sculpting and mold-making at the École Nationale Professionnelle de Saint-Étienne. After early explorations in ink and oil painting throughout the 1960s and 70s, Bénière shifted his practice entirely to wood carving by 1979.
Working within the language of modern abstraction, his approach is deeply romantic—his carvings seek not just form, but resonance. For Bénière, wood is not merely material, but a vessel of time and nature—a kind of hieroglyph through which the human spirit communes with the organic world.
