Pair of French Art Deco Glass Sconces by Jean Gauthier for EJG, 1930s

$4,800.00

A pair of French Art Deco sconces from the 1930s, designed by Jean Gauthier for Établissement Jean Gauthier (EJG).

Signed “J. Robert,” a pseudonym used by Gauthier, the sconces reflect the designer’s distinctive approach to molded glass, where geometric form and diffused light become part of the architecture. The shades are model #1049, formed in frosted molded glass with a softly sculptural profile that catches and disperses the light.

Nickel-plated mounts frame the glass with a metallic edge, introducing the cool, polished counterpoint characteristic of French Art Deco interiors. When illuminated, the frosted surfaces take on a warm, almost amber glow, revealing the depth of the molded pattern while keeping the light atmospheric.

About Jean Gauthier
Jean Gauthier was a French glassmaker and designer active during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, known particularly for his decorative glass and lighting. He established his first workshop at 12–14 rue Jean Robert in Paris before expanding production to Ézanville, north of the city. His early work included cameo glass, while later production focused on molded and pressed glass, often incorporating opalescent surfaces, geometric forms, and nature-inspired motifs.

Through the Établissements Jean Gauthier, Gauthier produced a wide range of lighting, including table lamps, pendants, sconces, and chandeliers, as well as architectural glass panels for interiors. During the 1930s, his Ézanville production was marketed under the name Ezan, with pieces distinguished by their luminous opalescent glass and modernist forms. His work reflects the transition from the organic vocabulary of Art Nouveau to the geometric elegance of French Art Deco.
