Pair of German Brutalist Bronze Nesting Coffee Tables Attributed to Lothar Klute
A pair of German nesting coffee tables from the 1980s, attributed to Lothar Klute, where bronze and glass are brought together with the confidence of the Brutalist movement.
Crafted from solid bronze, each base is forged with an expressive, worked quality that celebrates the material rather than concealing it. The sweeping legs rise in organic curves, their hammered surfaces revealing the marks of the maker, before terminating in delicately curled supports that cradle the glass tops. Marked "AF", the tables embody the artisanal approach that defined much of German studio furniture during the period.
The softly contoured glass tops introduce a sense of lightness, appearing to float above the weight of the bronze structure. Together, the contrast between transparency and solidity creates a composition that feels balanced, allowing the sculptural bases to remain the focal point.
Designed as nesting tables, the pair offers flexibility without compromising form. Displayed together, they create a layered arrangement with shifting heights and overlapping silhouettes. Separated, they function effortlessly as individual side tables, adapting to the changing rhythm of a room.
Klute’s work reflects a deeply rooted understanding of material and form. Trained as a blacksmith in Mailar and later studying sculpture in Aachen, he brought a sculptor’s sensibility to functional objects. In the 1970s, he produced public sculptures in Berlin, and together with his wife, interior designer Gisela Klute, created furniture that balanced imagination with refinement. Today, his legacy is preserved in part through a dedicated sculpture park at Galerie Klute in Waldemai.
