Pair of Italian Ribbed Glass Sconces Attributed to Stilnovo, 1950s

A pair of Italian wall sconces from the 1950s, attributed to Stilnovo, combining finely ribbed glass with a geometric brass structure. Each sconce is defined by a substantial, upward-facing glass shade, its rounded bowl-like form opening into a broad, clean rim. 

Closely spaced vertical ribs extend from the upper edge and converge toward the base, creating a delicate rhythm across the entire surface. The glass has a remarkable optical quality, appearing almost crystalline in daylight as the individual ridges catch and refract light.

The glass rests within a tapered cylindrical brass fitting, distinguished by a contrasting dark bronze-toned band around its center. A short, rectangular brass arm connects the fitting to a vertically oriented wall plate with softly beveled edges, creating a compact framework behind the rounded glass. 

The attribution to Stilnovo places the design within an important chapter of Italian lighting history. Founded in Milan in 1946 by Bruno Gatta, Stilnovo became known for its innovative approach to modern lighting, working with designers who explored the relationship between functional engineering, geometric form, and expressive materials. The company's lighting frequently brought together metal and glass in compositions that felt both technically considered and visually refined. These sconces reflect that sensibility through their restrained structure and emphasis on the decorative possibilities of light itself.

The ribbed glass is particularly compelling when illuminated. Rather than concealing the light source entirely, the vertical fluting breaks and softens its brightness, producing a warm, layered glow. The open upper edge also allows light to travel upward, gently illuminating the surrounding wall. When unlit, the shades retain their clarity and intricate texture, giving the sconces the presence of decorative glass objects.
