Pair of Italian Yellow Metal Sconces in the Manner of Stilnovo, 1950s

$3,600.00

A pair of Italian yellow metal wall sconces from the 1950s, in the manner of Stilnovo, defined by their vibrant color and proportions. Each sconce features two elongated, bottle-shaped shades in a brilliant lemon-yellow finish.

The forms begin with narrow cylindrical necks before expanding into softly rounded bodies, creating a silhouette that feels both playful and carefully considered. Their glossy surfaces emphasize the saturated color, while the open undersides allow light to be directed downward.

The shades are arranged at staggered heights, introducing an asymmetry that gives the composition a sense of movement. Slender brass-toned arms extend diagonally from a compact rectangular wall plate, supporting each shade through circular metal collars secured with small cylindrical fasteners. Black braided electrical cords remain visible, looping between the shades and the central mounting plate. Rather than concealing these functional elements, the design incorporates them into its visual language.

The contrast between materials is particularly compelling. The vivid yellow shades bring a sense of optimism and experimentation, while the darker, aged metal provides a more industrial counterpoint.

The design recalls the inventive spirit of Italian lighting during the 1950s, particularly the work associated with Stilnovo. Founded in Milan in 1946, Stilnovo became known for lighting that combined expressive color, innovative forms, and exposed structural elements. These sconces reflect that same sensibility, bringing together an almost industrial construction with the playful geometry and bold color that helped define modern Italian interiors.

The matching shades establish a clear visual rhythm, while their differing heights and angled supports prevent the composition from feeling static. Mounted beside a bed, above a console, or along a hallway, the sconces introduce both functional illumination and a strong graphic presence.
