Rare French Art Deco Modernist Secretary Desk by André Sornay, 1950s

$28,000.00

A rare French Art Deco Modernist secretary desk by André Sornay, produced in the 1950s.

Architectural in composition, the desk is defined by a disciplined geometry softened through material contrast. A solid wood frame grounds the structure in warmth and weight, while panels of brick red leather introduce a richness across the façade. The surface is uninterrupted, deliberate, almost planar—allowing the detailing to emerge slowly rather than announce itself immediately.

What distinguishes the piece is Sornay’s patented “cloutage” technique, developed in the late 1920s and refined throughout his career. Rows of small brass nailheads trace the edges of each panel with remarkable precision, framing the leather like inlaid lines of ornament. The effect is graphic yet subtle: a repetition of points that creates structure, shadow, and rhythm without excess. Here, decoration becomes inseparable from construction.

Produced in exceptionally small numbers, the desk reflects the rarefied nature of Sornay’s work during this period. Signed and retaining its original keys, it carries the clarity of French modernism while remaining distinct from the more industrial tendencies of the movement.

Sornay, who transformed the design language of Lyon to such an extent that the city’s Art Deco movement became known as “Le Style Sornay,” rejected historical revivalism in favor of a more functional and progressive aesthetic. Influenced by avant-garde figures such as Francis Jourdain and Pierre Chareau, he approached furniture as both utility and composition, balancing innovation with craftsmanship.
