Rare Sculptural Bronze Coffee Table by Victor Roman, Signed + Numbered 4/8, 1970s

$32,000.00

A rare low coffee table by Romanian-born sculptor Victor Roman, cast in solid bronze with a hand-polished finish. The biomorphic base ripples with curves and protrusions, referencing both human and animal forms. Above rests a thick beveled glass top, its freeform shape echoing the fluidity below. Signed and numbered 4/8, this piece is part of a limited edition series produced in the 1970s.

Victor Roman (1937–1995) was a Romanian-born sculptor who found his voice—and acclaim—in France during the latter half of the 20th century. He trained at the Lycée des Beaux-Arts in Târgu Mureș under Izsak Marton, then earned his diploma from the Nicolae Grigorescu Institute in Bucharest, where he studied with Constantin Baraschi and Ion Lucian Murnu.

His talent was quickly recognized: Roman received the Romanian Artists’ Union sculpture prize in 1963, followed by Geneva’s UIT award in 1965 and the Val-de-Marne Salon sculpture prize in 1971. A British Council scholarship brought him to the Royal College of Art in London, where encounters with Henry Moore and Lynn Chadwick left lasting impressions.

In 1968, Roman moved to France and joined the French National Foundation’s Hameau des Artistes. He won the Bobigny town hall commission in 1974 and spent the next decades traveling—Italy, Greece, Egypt, the U.S.—gathering inspiration. In 1994, he was named a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres. Roman’s work lives on in monumental bronze installations across Europe, including Bucharest, La Défense, Nancy, and Noisy-le-Grand.
