Set of 3 Vintage French 'Suspended Figures' Bronze Sculptures by Claude Cehes

$3,800.00

A rare set of three “Suspended Figures” by French sculptor Claude Cehes, dating to the 1980s.

Cast in patinated bronze, each sculpture pairs an elongated vertical form with expressive, abstracted figures that appear to emerge from both the base and upper reaches of the work. Grouped together, the three create an especially compelling rhythm, with variations in scale, form, and patina.

Cehes’ treatment of the human figure moves between figuration and abstraction. Bodies appear stretched, fragmented, and suspended, with the hand-worked surfaces of the bronze preserving the immediacy of the artist’s modeling.

Born in Algiers in 1949, Claude Cehes moved to France with her family in 1962. She studied classical sculpture in Paris under André Bourroux and Paul Belmondo before training in marble carving in Pietrasanta, Italy, and later attending the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Her first solo exhibition was held at Cérès Franco’s L’Œil de Bœuf gallery in Paris in 1980, and her work entered French public collections beginning in the early 1980s. Throughout her career, Cehes has worked across bronze, marble, wood, glass, and other materials, repeatedly returning to the human body and themes of human finitude.
