Swedish Wrought Iron Floor Candelabra Attributed to Bertil Vallien for Kosta Boda, 1960s
Attributed to Swedish artist and designer Bertil Vallien for Kosta Boda, this wrought iron floor candelabra dates to the 1960s. Standing just over three feet tall, six candleholders rise from sweeping iron arms, each finished with a petal-like cup and a small hammered sphere suspended beneath.
The details are especially good up close. Hammer marks remain visible across the iron, from the faceted spheres to the gently irregular edges of the arms and base. A larger hammered sphere rises through the center, while four shaped feet give the tall, narrow form a strong footing.
Bertil Vallien studied at Konstfack in Stockholm under Stig Lindberg, graduating in 1961 before spending time in the United States. He joined Kosta Boda in 1963 and has worked across ceramics, industrial design, and glass, eventually becoming one of Sweden’s most recognized glass artists.
His work is particularly associated with an interest in material and process, something that feels especially evident in the hand-worked surfaces of this early wrought iron piece.
