Vintage French Lion Sconce by Jean Marais with Bronze Finish - 2 Available
Part sculpture, part source of light, this original lion sconce by Jean Marais, crafted in France during the 1980s with a richly textured bronze finish, reflects the expressive visual language that shaped his work long after his celebrated acting career.
Signed by Marais himself, the lion is more than a decorative motif. Throughout his artistic practice, it became a symbol of the duality that fascinated him: strength and tenderness, ferocity and grace. Its radiating mane creates a sun-like silhouette around the face, while the richly textured bronze patina catches light across every ridge and contour, giving the piece a sense of movement even when unlit.
That symbolism traces back to one of Marais' most iconic roles. In Jean Cocteau's 1946 film Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et la Bête), Marais portrayed the Beast beneath an elaborate feline-inspired mask, creating a character who appeared fearsome yet revealed remarkable gentleness. The film's dreamlike interiors—filled with living sculpture, candlelit walls, and surreal architecture—remain among the most enduring images in French cinema.
These lion sconces feel like an extension of that world. Mounted on the wall, concealed illumination creates a warm halo around the form, recalling the enchanted château where sculpture seemed almost alive. They blur the line between lighting and art, transforming a functional object into something theatrical, atmospheric, and deeply sculptural.

Jean Marais (1913–1998) was one of France's most celebrated actors before establishing a second career as a sculptor and ceramicist in Vallauris. A longtime collaborator and close friend of filmmaker Jean Cocteau, Marais carried the same poetic imagination that defined their films into his later artwork, where lions, mythical figures, and expressive animals became recurring subjects. His sculptures remain among the most recognizable expressions of his artistic legacy.
