Vintage French Lion Table Lamp With Bronze Finish by Jean Marais

$8,000.00

A French table lamp by Jean Marais from the 1980s, centered around a sculptural lion rendered with an almost heraldic presence.

Cast in resin with a bronze finish, the lion is richly articulated, from the layered mane and finely modeled features to the direct, watchful expression. The surface catches the light across the raised details, giving the sculpture the depth and visual weight of patinated metal while retaining the expressive quality of the original form.

That symbolism traces back to one of Marais' most iconic roles. In Jean Cocteau's 1946 film Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et la Bête), Marais portrayed the Beast beneath an elaborate feline-inspired mask, creating a character who appeared fearsome yet revealed remarkable gentleness. The film's dreamlike interiors—filled with living sculpture, candlelit walls, and surreal architecture—remain among the most enduring images in French cinema.

The lion rises from a substantial stepped base, creating a strong vertical silhouette. Its theatrical character is balanced by the simplicity of the newly sourced lampshade above, allowing the sculptural base to remain the focus.

More than a functional light, the piece carries the presence of a decorative object or small sculpture. Placed on a console, side table, or bedside, it introduces a sense of ceremony and character to the room.

About Jean Marais
Jean Marais (1913–1998) was one of France's most celebrated actors before establishing a second career as a sculptor and ceramicist in Vallauris. A longtime collaborator and close friend of filmmaker Jean Cocteau, Marais carried the same poetic imagination that defined their films into his later artwork, where lions, mythical figures, and expressive animals became recurring subjects. His sculptures remain among the most recognizable expressions of his artistic legacy.
