French Wrought-Iron + Marble Console, 1970s
A French wrought-iron and marble console from the 1970s, with an open frame beneath a richly patterned stone top.
The rectangular marble surface moves through cream, blush pink, burgundy, and charcoal gray. Broad pale passages meet darker, fragmented veins, giving the stone an almost painterly quality. A slender edge keeps this expressive surface in proportion with the fine ironwork below.
Four narrow legs establish the frame, while two diagonal rods descend from the upper corners into a wide V. Small collars punctuate their length, introducing a measured rhythm to the spare lines. Near the floor, curved side stretchers soften the geometry, their inward sweeps finished with small spherical details.
At the center, a single iron leaf rises from the lower crossbar. Its shaped edges and raised veins bring a botanical note to the structure, concentrating the ornament in one detail. The iron’s deep brown finish draws out its texture and echoes the warmer markings in the marble.
In an entry, beneath a mirror, or along a living room wall, the console offers a display surface while preserving a clear view through its base.
