French Art Deco Sycamore Maple Coffee Table by Maurice Jallot, 1940s
A French Art Deco coffee table by Maurice Jallot, dating to the 1940s. Crafted from sycamore maple, the round top is laid in a precise radial veneer pattern that draws the eye inward, the warm, honeyed tones of the wood complemented by a subtly stepped edge. The surface reflects Jallot’s exacting cabinetmaking, where precision of grain and symmetry define the design.
The table rests on four gently tapered legs, each capped with patinated brass mounts. The proportions are deliberate and architectural, with a confidence that reflects Jallot’s modernist leanings within the Art Deco movement.
The son of celebrated cabinetmaker Léon Jallot, Maurice Jallot emerged as a distinct voice in French decorative arts after graduating from the École Boulle and working under Louis Süe. By the late 1920s, his work was exhibited independently, marked by a more progressive, modern sensibility than that of his father.
Throughout his career, Jallot produced furniture for private residences, public commissions, and prestigious interiors—including projects for the Élysée Palace and French embassies—earning international recognition for his meticulous craftsmanship and command of form.
This table exemplifies Jallot’s ability to balance material richness with disciplined design—an exceptional and highly refined work.
