French Brown Cerused Oak Coffee Table, 1940s

$6,400.00

A French cerused oak coffee table from the 1940s, sourced from a private estate that included several pieces attributed to Jacques Quinet.

The table was likely custom made for the interior itself, created in response to the architecture and proportions of the home rather than as part of a larger commercial production. Its silhouette is simple but deliberate: a circular top resting on a solid cylindrical pedestal, softened by rounded edges and balanced proportions that keep the form from feeling heavy.

Finished in a deep brown ceruse, the oak grain remains visible beneath the darker surface, giving the table a quiet sense of movement and depth. The cerusing process is highly labor intensive, requiring the wood to be brushed and worked by hand so the open grain catches the finish unevenly, allowing the veining to emerge with contrast and texture.

Grounded and architectural, the table reflects the restraint of much French custom furniture from the period—pieces designed to shape the atmosphere of a room through material, proportion, and surface.
