French Cerused Oak Chest of Drawers, 1940s
A French chest of drawers from the 1940s, defined by a graphic treatment of oak that brings rhythm to the form.
The drawer fronts and top are assembled from individual pieces of oak, with the grain deliberately oriented in opposing directions. This creates a repeating series of angular, geometric motifs across the surface, allowing the natural movement of the wood to become the primary decorative element. The cerused finish emphasizes those shifts in grain, giving the chest a textured, dimensional character.
Four drawers are framed within a substantial case, each fitted with simple glass handles that introduce a touch of clarity against the warmth of the oak. Pronounced feet lift the chest from the ground, extending the visual weight of the piece.
