French Gilt Bronze Table Lamp by Pierre Casenove for Fondica, 1995
There’s something almost ancient about the forms Pierre Casenove created for Fondica. Cast in bronze with a gilt finish, this 1995 table lamp brings together a series of abstract shapes, from the wide wing-like form at the top to the pair of tightly coiled spirals below.
The irregular, hand-worked surface is left visible throughout, catching the light differently across every part of the piece. Made in France and stamped “Casenove 95” and “Fondica France,” the lamp has the feeling of a small sculpture as much as a functional object.
We’re especially drawn to the contrast between the weight of the cast bronze and the playful, almost primitive quality of Casenove’s forms. Finished with a newly sourced tailored black shade.
Born in 1943 in Céret, France, Pierre Casenove is a leading figure in contemporary French ceramics. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, he devoted himself to ceramics early in his career, building his first kiln at the age of twenty.
For over four decades, from his studio in the Jura region, he has developed a distinctive practice that bridges art, design, and exceptional craftsmanship. Alongside collaborations with major glass, porcelain, lighting, and furniture companies, Casenove pursues a deeply personal approach to the unique ceramic object. His monumental stoneware works are defined by chamotte clay, restrained glazes, varied textures, and intentional imperfections.
Embracing cracks, irregularities, and traces of the firing process, he celebrates what he calls “the art of the imperfect object,” a philosophy that has earned his work international recognition.
