French Lounge Chair in Navy Alpaca Attributed to Dangles & Defrance, 1950s

$4,200.00

A 1950s French lounge chair attributed to Geneviève Dangles and Christian Defrance. The sculptural frame is composed of black-lacquered tubular steel, splaying gently at the legs in a light-footed stance. The angular silhouette features a wide, low seat and gently reclined backrest that tapers at the base, freshly reupholstered in deep navy alpaca—rich in tone, soft to the touch. The texture catches light with a subtle sheen, bringing quiet dimension to the minimalist form.

Ideal flanking a fireplace, anchoring a corner, or as a standalone statement.

Geneviève Dangles and Christian Defrance—both born in 1929—were a Paris-based design duo whose work helped define postwar French modernism. Dangles studied under René Gabriel at ENSAD and worked with Marcel Gascoin, while Defrance trained in wood sculpture at the École Boulle before also enrolling at ENSAD.

Together, they founded their studio in 1953 and went on to collaborate with manufacturers like Burov, creating forward-thinking designs in metal and fiberglass, often with a focus on ergonomics and modern living.
