French Neoclassical Wood + Églomisé Coffee Table, 1940s
Made in France during the 1940s, this coffee table pairs a carved wood pedestal base with an oval églomisé glass top. The glass is decorated from the reverse, with a silvered center surrounded by a warm gold ground and hand-painted scrolling foliage.
The wood base takes its cues from classical architecture, with a fluted central pedestal and layers of carved leaf detailing around the foot. A rope-twist border follows the edge of the tabletop, adding another hand-worked detail to the piece.
What makes the table so memorable is the surface itself. Over nearly a century, the silvering and gold ground have softened, darkened, and worn away in places, leaving behind a patchwork of shifting tones beneath the glass.
It’s the kind of surface that could only have developed slowly, and one that makes the table feel as though it has a story well beyond what we know of its years in Avignon.
