Italian Art Deco Wood Console, 1940s
An Italian Art Deco wood console from the 1940s, shaped by sweeping scroll supports and the contrast of deep brown and golden wood tones.
The rectangular top has softly rounded front corners, with long bands of grain extending across its surface. Beneath, two drawers sit side by side, their fronts distinguished by a lighter wooden molding with a gently scalloped lower edge. The detail introduces a flowing rhythm across the console while keeping everyday storage discreetly within reach.
At either side, dark wooden supports descend in long curves, curling inward at the base. Their sculptural profiles frame open space around a broad central panel, allowing the wall behind to become part of the composition. An arched plinth with closely spaced horizontal grooves grounds the piece, echoing the movement above.
The central panel brings another layer of contrast: four golden-toned sections enclosed by a fine matching border and a darker wooden surround. Its simple geometry balances the expressive scrolls, giving the console a distinctive interplay of flat surfaces, curved edges, and richly varied grain.
In an entry, it establishes a focal point beneath a mirror. Along a living room wall, it offers a surface for a lamp or a single sculptural object, with drawers for smaller essentials. A piece whose presence comes as much from its silhouette as its materials, bringing warmth and a sense of ceremony to the room.
