Italian Bamboo Oval Wall Mirror Attributed to Franco Albini, 1960s

An Italian oval wall mirror attributed to Franco Albini from the 1960s, shaped by the warmth and flexibility of bamboo.

The frame is constructed from lengths of bamboo bent into a continuous loop, following the elongated oval of the mirror. Rather than concealing its construction, the design makes a feature of it, the overlapping lengths, natural nodes, and subtle variations in tone create a rhythm around the perimeter. The frame reads almost as a single line drawn around the glass, giving the mirror presence without visual weight.

The use of bamboo connects the piece to an important chapter in Italian modernism. Albini was instrumental in bringing cane, rattan, and related natural materials into the language of modern design, most notably through his work with Vittorio Bonacina in the early 1950s. Designs such as the celebrated Margherita and Gala chairs demonstrated how traditional craft techniques could be transformed through disciplined structure and modern form.

That same tension between craft and modernity is what makes this mirror compelling. Bamboo is left tactile and recognizable, with its joints and construction visible, yet it is controlled into a clean, architectural silhouette. Its flexibility allows the frame to feel substantial without becoming heavy, while the rounded profile softens the geometry of the elongated oval.

The attribution to Albini is particularly fitting in this context. Throughout his work as an architect and designer, he approached furniture as an extension of architecture, reducing objects to essential lines while allowing their materials and construction to remain legible. Here, the loop frame does exactly that: material, structure, and decoration become one.
