Italian Brass + Glass Pendant attributed to Pietro Chiesa for Fontana Arte, 1950s
An Italian pendant from the 1950s, attributed to Pietro Chiesa for Fontana Arte, where glass, brass, and light are treated as equal parts of the composition.
The fixture is formed from two broad, shallow glass elements that meet around a brass band, creating a flattened, almost lens-like silhouette. A slender brass stem suspends the pendant from above, while a small scalloped brass fitting anchors the lower glass.
Etched botanical motifs move around the perimeter of the glass, alternating between transparent and softly frosted passages. The decoration becomes especially expressive when illuminated, as light passes through the clear areas while the etched leaves diffuse it, casting subtle patterns across the surface. A warm patina to the brass gives the fixture additional depth against the transparency of the glass.
The pendant’s strength lies in the precision of its profile. Seen from the side, the opposing glass curves create a remarkably thin horizontal form; viewed from below, the etched decoration becomes more prominent, revealing details that change according to perspective and light.
Atmospheric when illuminated, the pendant has the visual presence to anchor a dining table or seating area without feeling heavy overhead. A fixture where the decorative quality is embedded directly into the glass, allowing its character to shift between daylight and evening.
