Italian Brass Vanity Mirror Attributed to Gio Ponti, 1940s
An Italian brass vanity mirror from the 1940s, attributed to Gio Ponti, where functional design is elevated through proportion, material, and restraint.
Suspended within a delicately balanced brass frame, the shield-shaped mirror pivots effortlessly, designed to be adjusted with a simple movement.
The hammered brass base introduces texture beneath the polished frame, catching the light with subtle variation while grounding the piece with quiet solidity. Decorative scroll feet and a finely detailed crest add just enough ornament, allowing the craftsmanship to speak without excess.
Gio Ponti, an eclectic visionary, immersed himself in architecture, painting, graphics, and set design from the outset. Graduating in architecture from the Milan Polytechnic in 1920, he co-founded the influential magazine Domus with editor Gianni Mazzocchi in 1926, directing it until his passing. In 1931, Ponti assumed the artistic direction at Luigi Fontana and, in 1932, founded Fontana Arte with Pietro Chiesa, leaving an indelible mark on modern design.
