Italian Cast Plaster Bas-Relief Panel, 1940s
An Italian cast plaster bas-relief panel from the 1940s, drawing on the visual language of antiquity to create an object that feels as much architectural as sculptural.
Cast in plaster, the rectangular panel depicts an equestrian procession inspired by Classical Greek and Roman relief sculpture. Figures mounted on horseback emerge in shallow relief, their softly modelled drapery and overlapping forms recalling the carved friezes that once adorned temples, monuments, and civic buildings. The restrained palette allows light and shadow to define the composition, revealing new details as the day shifts.
Its scale is what gives the piece its presence. Large enough to command a wall on its own, it reads less as decoration and more as an architectural fragment—suggesting it has been lifted from a larger classical structure and given a new context. The low relief creates depth without weight, allowing the composition to feel both substantial and understated.
