Italian Demilune Wall-Mounted Console in the Manner of Osvaldo Borsani, 1940s

$4,200.00

An Italian demilune wall-mounted console from the 1940s, in the manner of Osvaldo Borsani.

The half-moon top sits close to the wall, its dark surface creating a strong horizontal line above an apron wrapped in closely spaced vertical wood fluting. A concealed central drawer is worked directly into this rhythm, allowing storage to nearly disappear within the façade. Even the drawer front continues the fluted treatment, preserving the console’s remarkably continuous profile.

Below, the structure becomes more expressive. Two slender supports sweep inward in a symmetrical curve, their surfaces alternating between smooth molded edges and deeply carved, almost feather-like bands. At the base, the supports resolve into tight scrolls above a fluted cylindrical foot, repeating the vertical rhythm of the apron on a smaller scale. The effect is decorative without feeling heavy, the open center leaves much of the wall visible and gives the piece a lightness that belies the amount of craftsmanship involved.

That tension between ornament and disciplined geometry is particularly evocative of Osvaldo Borsani’s work during the 1940s. Before establishing Tecno with his brother Fulgenzio in 1953 and becoming known for increasingly modern, technically driven furniture, Borsani worked within his family’s atelier, Arredamenti Borsani Varedo, creating sophisticated interiors and furnishings in which traditional Italian craftsmanship met a more architectural approach to design. Pieces from this period often reveal that transition: carved wood and artisanal detail remain important, but they are organized into cleaner, more controlled compositions.

The wall-mounted construction is part of what makes this console especially compelling. Without conventional legs occupying the floor, its demilune form appears almost suspended against the wall, making it well suited to an entry, narrow passage, or beneath a mirror or artwork. The integrated drawer adds function without disturbing the silhouette, while the repetition of fluting and carving rewards a closer look.
